The Blue Knight Life Saving Service Award

The BOG oversees the Life Saving Service Award. This award is given to those Blue Knights whose actions have contributed directly to saving someone's life. This can be something that they have done at work, while off-duty, on their way to and from a Blue Knight event or while at a Blue Knight event. This award is to honor those individuals and recognize them for their acts of heroism and their actions that contribute directly to saving someone's life.

Blue Knights IL XX would like to nominate two of our members for a Life Saving Service Award, for their actions in August while traveling on their motorcycles in South Dakota.

On the afternoon of August 22, 2025, at 12:58 p.m., Blue Knights IL XX Honorary members Daniel Donile and Tim Krause were riding their motorcycles on a vacation trip on Interstate 90 in Pennington County, South Dakota. This is in the southwest portion of the state near Rapid City, Wall, and Badlands National Park. Ahead of them on Interstate 90 was a Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck towing a toy hauler trailer. Suddenly the truck and trailer lost control while changing lanes and overturned. The truck and trailer landed on their sides perpendicular to the roadway, blocking both lanes. Dan and Tim pulled over immediately and approached the pickup truck. They noticed that there was gasoline spilling onto the roadway from the truck and also from two motorcycles which were in the rear of the upended toy hauler. They noticed the 66-year-old male passenger of the truck was out of the truck and on his feet, but the female 63-year-old driver was trapped in the crushed cab of the truck. Gasoline was spilled on the ground. Daniel and Tim located a pocketknife on the ground and cut the seatbelt to free the driver. They then located a tarp and helped the driver exit the cab through the window and lie on the tarp. They dragged the driver on the tarp a long distance away from the overturned truck in case the truck exploded. Meanwhile, an emergency room nurse who had been traveling on Interstate 90 approached the scene and began giving medical care to the driver. Soon afterwards, the Pennington County Sheriff, South Dakota Highway Patrol, and Wall Emergency Medical Services arrived on the scene to investigate. The driver and passenger were both transported to a local hospital.

Daniel and Tim notified our Chapter President, Michael Campo, of the circumstances soon after the incident. We later obtained a copy of the accident report from the Highway Patrol and also observed photographs taken by Daniel and Tim at the scene.

Blue Knights Illinois XX is extremely proud of our members Daniel Donile and Tim Krause and their actions that day. We believe that their quick actions saved the life of the female driver due to her being trapped in the truck and the presence of gasoline on the pavement. We respectfully request that the Board of Governors recognize Daniel and Tim with Life Saving Service Awards at the International Convention.

Sincerely,
Michael C. Campo, President
